GIS Geographical Information Systems A

Students have a deeper understanding about geographical information systems, their architecture, components, and functionality. They know different methods for geometric and topological modelling, various related spatial data structures with different degrees of geometric and topological information, and how to model geospatial data within geographical information systems. They are able to practically express complex geospatial problems within geographical information systems and solve them with geospatial analysis methods.

Students understand the main concepts of cartography and their technical implementations. They can distinguish between different forms of data and choose appropriate cartographic presentation methods. They are familiar with the concepts behind different cartographic projection systems, know their applications, can interpret different forms of projections, understand their limitations, transform between different systems, and choose the appropriate projection for given geographical areas and tasks. They can work with standard geographical information software technologies to generate classical paper maps, digital maps, and web applications in 2D.
